I am participating in the Alpe d'HuZes because ...
CANCER SUCKS - it’s f”cking terrible. Full stop. Everyone knows someone. Everyone has seen someone suffer, has lost someone they loved. Also in our family this treacherous disease has hit way too close to home.
Here is what gets me: humanity has put robots on Mars, and yet this disease is still here, amongst us, still winning battles it shouldn't. I am convinced that that's not a lack of human genius. That's a lack of resources and funding. Clinical research, supporting patients going through treatment and living with cancer, costs money. The brilliant people trying to solve this need more resources.
So this is what I'm doing. I'm cycling up Alpe d'Huez. Twice - maybe more. In one day. Will it hurt? Obviously. I’ve celebrated my 35th birthday for more than a decade, and am not in peak athletic condition. At this point I genuinely cannot always tell whether I'm overheating from effort or a hot flash. Both, probably. My legs will file a formal complaint around hour three and I will absolutely question every decision I've ever made, while 3,999 fitter, faster, better-prepared riders pass me. That's fine. A little suffering on a bike feels like the bare minimum I can do when “giving up is not an option”.
